If you’re facing a confirmed unplanned pregnancy, it’s important to remember not to panic. You may feel overwhelmed, but remember you have options and it’s vital for you to make a fully informed decision about what to do with your pregnancy.

After a positive pregnancy test, your next step should be to get an ultrasound. This will allow you to see inside your womb and will give some very important information regarding what options you’ll have moving forward.

1. An ultrasound will tell you how far along you are after a positive pregnancy test.

Even if you have a pretty good idea of how far along you are, an ultrasound will give you a more precise time frame, which is important if you’re considering an abortion. If you’re less than ten weeks pregnant, you’ll likely have a medication abortion (also commonly referred to as the abortion pill). If you’re more than ten weeks along, you’ll have to have a surgical abortion.

2. An ultrasound will reveal the location of the pregnancy.

Approximately one in fifty women will have an ectopic pregnancy, which is a pregnancy located outside of the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes. Ectopic pregnancies are not viable and can be life-threatening for you and the fetus. It’s important to get an ultrasound so you know exactly where the pregnancy is and to avoid medical complications if it’s outside the uterus.

After providing an ultrasound, we also offer confidential consultations for free to help you understand all of your options. This can be very helpful if you’re feeling overwhelmed or confused about what to do. We never pressure anyone toward a particular decision, but we provide accurate information on all options so you can make an informed choice.
