When faced with an unplanned pregnancy, it’s vital to have all the information you need to make an informed decision. At PRC Grand Rapids, we’re here to provide you with comprehensive insights into the potential risks and side effects of abortion procedures. Understanding these risks is essential for your health and well-being, and it is always recommended to fully understand the risks and side effects of any medical procedure you may undergo.

Types of Abortion and Their Risks

There are two primary types of abortion procedures—medical (also known as the abortion pill) and surgical. Each comes with its own set of risks and potential side effects. Let’s explore them in detail:

Medical Abortion

A medical abortion – or the abortion pill – involves taking medication to end a pregnancy. It is typically used during the early stages, up to 10 weeks of gestation. The procedure involves two drugs, one to stop the pregnancy from continued development, and one to expel it from the uterus.

Risks associated with medical abortion include:

  • Incomplete Abortion: This can occur when the pregnancy tissue is not entirely expelled, potentially requiring a surgical procedure to complete the process.
  • Heavy and Prolonged Bleeding: Some women may experience significant bleeding, which could require medical attention.
  • Blood Clots: It’s normal to see large blood clots, but the danger is when some of the fetal tissue remains inside the uterus, which can block the cervix and fill the uterus with blood.
  • Gastrointestinal Discomfort: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain are common side effects.
  • Fever or chills, indicating a possible infection or reaction to the medications.

Just like any kind of abortion, there is also a risk for infection. Infections are usually caused when the body does not expel all of the fetal tissue. Symptoms to look out for are fever and chills, heavy bleeding and foul smelling discharge. Seek medical attention immediately if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortions involve physical procedures to remove the pregnancy tissue. The most common methods include suction aspiration (up to 12 weeks) and dilation and curettage (up to 16 weeks).

Risks associated with surgical abortion include:

  • Infection: A risk present in any surgical procedure, which can occur from bacteria introduced during the procedure.
  • Incomplete abortion: A surgical abortion poses the risk of resulting in an incomplete abortion. This risk heightens the further along the pregnancy is.
  • Excessive Bleeding: While less common, heavy bleeding can occur, potentially necessitating further medical intervention.
  • Perforation of the Uterus: This is a rare but serious risk where the surgical instruments can puncture the uterine wall.
  • Cervical Damage: The cervix may be injured during the procedure, which could affect future pregnancies.
  • Scarring of the Uterine Lining (also known as Asherman’s syndrome), which could affect fertility.

Whichever abortion method is used, it is widely recommended to first get an ultrasound to ensure the pregnancy’s location, as well as an STD test – both of which PRC Grand Rapids offers completely free of charge. Both an ectopic pregnancy and an STD will severely increase your chances of adverse abortion risks and side effects.

Common Side Effects

Regardless of the type of abortion, some common side effects might include emotional distress, extreme cramping, and heavy bleeding. It’s crucial to monitor these symptoms and contact a healthcare professional if they worsen or don’t improve over time. Remember, receiving care for abortion related injuries or illnesses is not illegal anywhere, no matter the abortion laws.
