We believe knowledge is power — and power is yours when you have clear information about your reproductive healthcare options.

Medical Abortion Pill Information

Medication abortion — often called the abortion pill — uses two medications to end a pregnancy. The first stops the pregnancy from developing by blocking progesterone, an essential hormone. The second causes the uterus to empty. Knowing how the process works, its potential side effects, and your health considerations helps you make an informed choice about your reproductive care.

Facing an Unexpected

Pregnancy?

Even after taking a pregnancy test at home, you still might be asking this question. It can be shocking to find out you are pregnant when you weren’t expecting it. Alternatively, it can be confusing when you are experiencing early pregnancy symptoms but your at-home tests come back negative.

At PRC GR, we provide lab-quality pregnancy testing so you can get reliable results in a confidential, supportive environment. Our licensed clinical professionals are here to give you accurate answers, address your concerns, and guide you through your options. Your appointment is judgment-free, pressure-free, and focused entirely on your well-being.

FAQs

At PRC GR, we provide lab-quality pregnancy testing so you can get reliable results in a confidential, supportive environment. Our licensed clinical professionals are here to give you accurate answers, address your concerns, and guide you through your options. Your appointment is judgment-free, pressure-free, and focused entirely on your well-being.

An ultrasound provides essential information about your pregnancy, especially if you’re still weighing your options. It can help answer three key questions used in clinical care:

  • Is the pregnancy located inside the uterus (and not ectopic)?
  • Is the pregnancy viable?
  • How far along is the pregnancy?

Having these answers is crucial for your health and helps you make informed decisions based on accurate, reliable information.

Your initial visit typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. We want to ensure you have plenty of time and a comfortable space to get the answers you need, ask any questions, and feel fully supported—without ever feeling hurried. Depending on your individual needs, your appointment may include:

  • Lab-quality urine pregnancy testing
  • A limited obstetrical ultrasound, when clinically appropriate
  • STI/STD screening and testing
  • Clear, compassionate education about all your pregnancy options

At PRC GR, we’re committed to providing you with honest information and support so you can make choices that feel right for you.

All you need to bring is a valid photo ID—nothing more.

Absolutely! You’re welcome to bring a trusted friend, partner, or family member for support during your appointment. They can join you for much of your visit to provide comfort and encouragement.

Please note, to ensure a calm environment for everyone, we kindly ask that you arrange childcare beforehand, as children are not permitted in the clinic.

Yes, it’s possible to be pregnant while also having an STI or STD, even if you don’t notice any symptoms.

Untreated infections can pose serious risks to both your health and your pregnancy. That’s why early testing and treatment are vital—no matter what you decide about your pregnancy. If you receive a positive pregnancy test at our clinic, we will follow up with an STD test to ensure any risks are addressed.

Yes. PRC GR is a fully licensed medical clinic staffed by experienced registered nurses and supervised by a licensed medical director. We provide high-quality pregnancy-related medical care with compassion, professionalism, and a dedication to your well-being.

All of the medical care you receive will be performed by a medical professional. You’ll be in good hands at every stage of your journey.

Abortion Procedures

There are two main types of abortion procedures: medical (or chemical) abortion and surgical abortion. The procedure recommended depends on factors such as how far along the pregnancy is, your overall health, and your ability to access follow-up or emergency care if needed.

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion is a procedure used to end a pregnancy. If you’re more than 10 weeks pregnant and not eligible for the abortion pill—or if the medication abortion does not work—surgical abortion may be necessary.

  • Suction/Aspiration Abortion: This is the most common surgical abortion method and is typically performed up to 14 weeks after your last menstrual period (LMP). The procedure involves a local anesthetic and possibly IV sedation. The cervix is gently dilated, and a suction device is used to remove the fetus from the uterus. A curette may also be used to ensure the uterus is fully cleared.
  • Dilation & Evacuation (D&E): Used between 15 weeks and 22 weeks, 6 days LMP, this procedure is done with a local anesthetic and possibly IV sedation or general anesthesia. After viability (23 weeks and beyond), the process may take 2–3 days with appropriate anesthesia. Because D&Es are usually a late term abortion option, they are inherently riskier and pose the biggest threat to your health.

Our clinical professionals will provide thorough explanations with no pressure or judgment.

Medical Abortion (Abortion Pill)

The abortion pill is approved for use up to 10 weeks after your last menstrual period. It involves taking two medications 24 to 48 hours apart: the first stops the pregnancy from progressing, and the second causes your uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Before having an abortion, it’s important to have an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy’s location, viability, and gestational age. At PRC GR ultrasounds are provided at no cost to you. Our clinical team is here to answer all your questions so you can make an informed choice about your care.

The Abortion Pill

Abortion Pill In-Depth

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the abortion pill through 70 days (10 weeks) of pregnancy. A medical/chemical abortion procedure uses two drugs to terminate a pregnancy. The first medication ends the pregnancy by blocking the hormone progesterone. This causes the fetal heart to stop and the pregnancy to detach from the uterine lining. Up to 48 hours later, the second medication is taken, which causes strong uterine cramping to expel the embryo/fetus and pregnancy tissue.

Before Taking The Abortion Pill

We recommend scheduling a pregnancy screening and ultrasound appointment for your health and safety.

A pregnancy screening appointment is critical because it reduces risk to your health and equips you with information unique to you and your pregnancy so you can make a fully informed decision.

A pregnancy screening appointment includes time with our licensed medical staff, a medical-grade pregnancy test, a limited obstetrical ultrasound, and STI/STD testing. The four essential purposes for this appointment are:

  1. Confirming that you have a viable pregnancy.
  2. Determining gestational age and available options.
  3. Testing to be sure you don’t have an STI (sexually transmitted infection).
  4. Supporting you and answering all of your questions.

To protect your emotional, psychological, and physical health, before proceeding with an abortion it is important to have all the information mentioned above.

Side Effects and Risks

The most common side effects of a surgical abortion include:

  • Bleeding and passing blood clots
  • Intense cramping
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Feeling faint/sweating

Complications of a surgical abortion include:

  • Severe infection
  • Damage to the cervix or uterus
  • Excessive bleeding

Your Pregnancy Options

Abortion

If abortion is an option you’re considering, it’s important to know there are different types available, including surgical procedures and medication abortion (also known as the abortion pill). The cost and availability depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Our team is here to provide clear, factual information about abortion options, potential side effects, and any associated risks.

PRC GR does not perform or refer for elective abortions, we offer free, non-judgmental pre-abortion screenings to help you explore this option with confidence.

Adoption

If you’re planning to continue your pregnancy but don’t feel ready to parent, adoption may be a path to consider. We’ll guide you through the different types of adoption, explain the process, and connect you with trusted adoption agencies that can support you along the way.

The Common Ground

Something that all pregnancies have in common is the unknown, especially if this is your first baby. Your mind might be racing and thinking about the best formula brand to feed your baby, how you are going to provide childcare if/when you go back to work and all the different features on strollers that you don’t know how to work yet. It’s ok – and we are here to help. No matter where you are emotionally, we want to be a supportive presence.

At PRC GR, our priority is to walk with you—whether your pregnancy was planned or unplanned—so you can move forward with confidence and hope.

Quick Facts About Pregnancy Ultrasounds

  • When to Schedule: A pregnancy ultrasound is usually recommended around 6–8 weeks after your last menstrual period. If your pregnancy is confirmed in our clinic, we will likely perform or schedule an ultrasound right away to ensure you are given all the information about your pregnancy as soon as possible.
  • Why It’s Needed: Confirms the pregnancy is in the uterus, checks for a heartbeat, and determines how far along you are. In the unlikely event you are experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, you will need to know that information immediately so you can act quickly to receive the necessary care.

What to Expect: A safe, painless procedure performed by trained medical staff at our clinic. Our ultrasounds are always abdominal.

Before Abortion: An ultrasound before abortion is still necessary. It is never recommended (and in fact extremely dangerous) for a woman to take the abortion pill while experiencing an ectopic pregnancy. Additionally, if there is an embryo detected but no heartbeat, a woman will miscarry the pregnancy and there will be no need for an abortion.

Cost: At PRC GR, we provide free ultrasounds. no insurance or payment required.

Next Steps: Following your ultrasound, our caring team will walk with you through your pregnancy options, whether you’re considering parenting, adoption, or abortion. We can also give you a timeline with checkpoints to make sure you are receiving further prenatal care at the appropriate times.

How Soon Can I Take a Pregnancy Test?

The best time to take a pregnancy test at home is after you’ve missed your period. Pregnancy hormones (hCG) usually become detectable within 10–14 days after conception, which is usually around the time that your period would come. Some at-home tests advertise that they can detect hCG earlier than your missed period, but the accuracy is far from perfect.
Because of the sensitivity and accuracy of our tests, our tests offer reliable results as soon as you miss your period. If you don’t track your period or your cycles are irregular, our team can help you determine if it’s the right time to test so you can get results you can trust.

Even if you’ve taken a test at home, we still recommend you come into the clinic to confirm the results. At-home tests can sometimes be inaccurate and give false negatives (false positives are possible but extremely unlikely). That’s why many women choose a pregnancy test clinic like PRC GR for reliable, medical-grade results.

A positive test result can bring up many emotions. At PRC GR, a positive test is just the beginning of the support we offer. We provide free ultrasounds to confirm whether the pregnancy is viable and determine how far along you are. From there, we’ll walk with you as you explore your options, offering compassionate, judgment-free care.

Home pregnancy tests may be convenient, but they can’t match the accuracy of a lab-quality pregnancy test. At PRC GR, our tests are designed for precision and reliability, ensuring you have trustworthy results before making important decisions about your future. Additionally, all of our tests are administered by trained staff members to further minimize any chance for errors.

At home, there might not be anyone to guide you to your next steps or answer any of your questions. PRC GR can be that support for you. If your test is positive in the clinic, we will immediately offer support that you can choose to lean on.

If you’re wondering whether you might be pregnant, the first step is getting accurate answers. At PRC GR, we offer free, lab-quality pregnancy testing that is more reliable than most at-home tests. Our clinic provides confidential, accurate results in a supportive, professional environment.
