Little Known Newborn Facts

Having a newborn is such a fun (and stressful) time of life, and getting to know all the little quirks about this stage is so fascinating. Here are a couple of fun facts about newborn babies that you might not know.

Fast Growing Bodies

Newborn babies grow at an astonishing rate. Right after birth, many infants lose a little bit of weight, but by about two weeks old they’re back up to their birth weight. In their first year, babies often triple their birth weight and grow nearly 10 inches in length!

This rapid growth happens because babies need fuel for organ development, brain wiring, and muscle formation. Parents and caregivers can support this by offering frequent feedings—whether breastmilk or formula—and keeping in close touch with pediatric visits. According to the World Health Organization, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months helps babies get the nutrients they need during this critical window of growth (source WHO).

Built-In Survival Skills

Newborns come with a set of reflexes that help them survive outside the womb. The rooting reflex makes a baby turn their head and open their mouth when you stroke their cheek; it’s how they find the nipple. The sucking reflex then helps them feed effectively. Another is the grasp reflex, where you can place a finger in a baby’s palm and they’ll curl all their little fingers around it.

These reflexes typically fade as babies’ brains and muscles mature. Around four to six months, you might notice that the grasp reflex gives way to a more voluntary reach and grab. Pediatricians at the American Academy of Pediatrics note that checking these reflexes is an important part of newborn exams to make sure a baby’s nervous system is developing normally (source AAP).

Senses That Are Amazingly Sharp

Newborns might arrive with blurry vision, but their senses of smell and hearing are surprisingly strong. Babies recognize their mother’s voice at birth and can pick it out from all others. They can even smell mother’s milk—and in the first days of life, that scent guides them right to the breast.

While vision starts off near 20/400, it sharpens quickly over the first few months. Color vision develops by around five months, and depth perception follows soon after. In the early weeks, babies can best see high-contrast patterns—like black and white shapes—so you’ll often find toy makers designing mobiles and cards with bold designs.

Unique Fingerprints and Footprints

Every person has a one-of-a-kind pattern of swirls and ridges on their fingertips and soles. Even identical twins have unique prints. These patterns form before birth, around weeks 10 to 16 of pregnancy, and remain the same through life. Hospitals sometimes take footprints or fingerprints for identification, but you can also capture those tiny prints in ink or clay as a keepsake. It’s a sweet way to remember just how small your newborn’s feet and hands once were.

Sleep That Fuels Brain Growth

Newborns spend about 16 to 18 hours a day sleeping, though it comes in bursts of two to four hours. This pattern isn’t just a coincidence. Sleep supports memory, learning, and the massive brain growth happening in those first months. REM sleep—when dreaming occurs—makes up nearly half of a newborn’s sleep time, compared to about 20 percent for adults.

Though interrupted sleep can be tough on caregivers, remember that these rest periods are critical for your baby’s development. Establishing gentle routines—like dimming lights at night and playing soothing sounds—can help babies learn night-day differences without forcing a strict schedule too early.
